We always welcome gifts of plants wanting a good home. When the ‘Tropical Garden’ was first landscaped, we were given a variegated agave. Looking suitably exotic we put it to the forefront of the garden. Its attractiveness caught the attention of a petty thief, and it was removed for their (cash?) benefit, and the loss of everyone else’s enjoyment.
Subsequently, we put in concealed netting under any plant we thought at risk: either donations or purchased. Not making it impossible to steal, but requiring a certain mount of hard work to remove: work is not what the thief is about.
Recently, we were offered a replacement, the donor knowing of the sad tale of the first. Not only a large plant, but also a number of its ‘babies’ (including an ‘adopted child’ perhaps? A different variety, anyway) These were duly protected with netting, concealed under wood chip. Hopefully to live and thrive, and to give enjoyment to many.
