Ace Acer Planting: a Spontaneous Ceremony

One picture is worth a thousand words…’

Acer Planting
Acer Planting

A few words to explain this example of how The Friends of Coy Pond enjoy working well together to improve the area.

Liz, a Friend and supporter, sourced two fine acer saplings, around 8 foot high, and looking for a good home. These were brought, bare-rooted, to our Tuesday session (24th March). Wayne, our Chair and volunteer project manager (right) had thought of space by the Pond. But Rob, Head council gardener (centre) suggested a more suitable planting area in the meadow leading down to the Bourne Stream. He is holding the front acer, and looking pleased as both trees and labour were provided by the Friends (‘the best things in life…’). The whole project typical of close co-operation between Friends and BCP council.

Wayne pulled off the ‘Heavy Mob’ from their landscaping work in the new Bog Garden area, for them to do the actual planting. They are the ones with the spades, of course. The ‘Heavy Mob’ is their volunteer nickname. They are Al. (left, with dug hole) and Julian (right of second acer). John Hallett is the other acer supporter, regular Friend and gardener, whose professional gardening knowledge is invaluable.

‘Out of shot’ volunteer gardeners were maintaining the rockery, and doing new planting around the Pond. Fifteen Friends on that session, and more than twenty volunteers give of their time. Do come and join us any Tuesday  (10.00 to 12.00) in the season. With 550 feet of rockery, and more than half a dozen gardens round the pond, plenty to do. A friendly welcoming group. No experience necessary. Free green therapy!
