Vandals Hit Coy Pond

On Thursday evening, the vandalised standpipe by the Wren Crescent steps was discovered, gushing out wasted water.  The same volunteer gardener from The Friends of Coy Pond had returned on Thursday evening, following his gardening on Tuesday, only to find the disaster that awaited him. The criminal damage reported to the police, he then had to set about making good that damage.

A year ago, The Friends of Coy Pond sourced funding for a standpipe to serve that end of the gardens around Coy Pond. The water company took the supply to the boundary of Coy Pond. But the considerable work involved in connecting and installing the standpipe fell entirely to the volunteers of the Friends. And the cost of the metered water falls entirely on the funds of The Friends of Coy Pond.

In recent years, there has been regular planting by the Friends around the Pond. This has included new trees and shrubs, donated, and sometimes in memory of departed loved ones. In this year’s drought, it is of course essential that these receive regular watering to survive.

A local resident commented on ‘a leak’, and was told in no uncertain terms this was the result of wanton destruction. A waste of resources, both of scarce water, and in volunteer time, and money.
